Physical Appearance: Tseng is Wutaian, which means he looks vaguely Chinese or Japanese, with almond-shaped eyes and straight, shoulder-length black hair which he wears in a high ponytail or sometimes down. His skin is dusky, and he has a black dot in the centre of his forehead. He's slender but very physically fit, with the whipcord muscles of a black-belt martial artist. He generally wears black or navy blue suits, and a very large sidearm. Personality and Traits: Tseng is extremely, extremely loyal. If someone has earned his loyalty, he is theirs for life. He has disobeyed orders, risked his life, and killed without conscience simply to protect those he is loyal to. And he'd do it again. One of the main things he has to deal with in his life is reconciling the various pulls of those loyalties upon him, particularly between Zack, his old friend, and Rufus, his employer. Related to his loyalty, his duty and honour are very important to him, but he considers his duty to be to those individuals he has pledged himself to, and his honour is connected to fulfilling that duty. These things have little to do with the actual orders he's been given. He's not above lying to those he's loyal to, if he believes it's for their own good. Nor is he above cold-blooded murder for the good of the Company. He is a calm man, calculating and cool under fire, with an excellent grasp of tactics and battle strategy. He maintains a tight control over his emotions, and over himself, but he's far from dispassionate inside. He cares deeply for certain individuals, and that caring can cause him to take risks he wouldn't otherwise take, even foolish ones - see: loyalty. In the area of traits... Interestingly, he has no particular loyalty to his Wutaian heritage. He considers ShinRa to be his family now, and in particular the Turks. He's officially an enemy of the Wutaian race, at this point, as he fought on the side of ShinRa during the war. Meditation and physical exertion are his favourite ways of unwinding after a hard day. He is extremely self-sufficient and prefers quiet solitary activities to just about anything else, though Veld did teach him how to play chess, and he is also an accomplished Go player, though he has few to play that with. He considers Go to be superior to chess, but it's hard to find anyone who can match him at it. He disdains television, and in fact has little patience for most technological toys, though he's good at using what he needs to use for his job. Canon Background: Little is known about Tseng's childhood, so some of this will be headcanon, my apologies. Headcanon bit: Tseng was born in Wutai. When he was a young teen, his parents took him on a trip to the other continent, to see the building of the fabled Midgar plate, at this point only starting to be built. Unfortunately, his parents were killed in a train accident, and Tseng was stranded in a city where he barely spoke the language and knew no one. There were few Wutaians in Midgar at the time, and Tseng had no resources of his own. He abandoned his last name and lived on the streets for a few years before meeting a man named Veld. Veld was later to become the head of ShinRa's Department of Administrative Research. At this time, he was merely a Turk operative, and one of the main functions of the Turks was to recruit for ShinRa's various military branches. Veld saw the potential of having a Wutaian operative in the Turks, and he recruited Tseng, training him personally and adding to Tseng's already considerable martial arts talents by teaching him covert operations and how to handle a sidearm. By the time Veld became head of the Turks a few years later, he was the first to earn Tseng's loyalty. Actual Canon from here on out: Tseng went on several missions with a SOLDIER named Zack, not only earning Zack's trust, but coming to trust him in return. While they worked together to deal with Angeal and Genesis' defections, Zack became the second person to earn Tseng's loyalty. When Zack left on what was to be his last mission, Zack asked Tseng to watch over his girlfriend Aerith. Tseng knew that Aerith was wanted by ShinRa, but he successfully diverted ShinRa from within for the next 5 years, thinking Zack had been killed in the Nibelheim Incident, keeping Aerith safe from his own employer. He also fell in love with her, at least in a brotherly manner, though he rarely spoke to her in anything but a professional manner. By the end of those five years, Tseng had several dozen letters in a locked drawer in his desk, addressed to Zack from Aerith. Veld had disappeared under mysterious circumstances and Tseng had covered it up. Rufus ShinRa had been captured by the Turks and held in 'protective custody' to prevent President ShinRa from interfering too much in their operations. And by that point, Tseng had become something between a surrogate father to Rufus, and the head of his personal security forced. Rufus had become the third person to home Tseng owed his loyalty. Then Zack escaped from Nibelheim. Tseng used his powers as the head of Turks to try to bring him in safely, certain he could protect Zack and reunite him with Aerith if he could just get the SOLDIER to their headquarters. Unfortunately, the regular ShinRa army got him first. Tseng continued to watch over Aerith, until Rufus himself asked him to bring her in. Again his loyalties were pulling him in two directions, but Tseng did do as he was instructed - or tried. The terrorist faction Avalanche managed to get her to safety before he could take her to Hojo - something for which he is eternally grateful. Tseng chased Avalanche across half the world, finally catching up to them in the City of Ancients, where Sephiroth nearly killed him. He was mostly out of the action, healing up until after Meteor. He helped dig Rufus out of the ruins of ShinRa Tower and devoted himself exclusively to caring for his friend and employer, the last living person to whom Tseng was devoted. He was captured by Sephiroth's three revenants on a mission and tortured, but was freed by Vincent Valentine - not a fact he's sure he knows what to do with. Strengths/Abilities: Tseng has been a member of or head of a covert operations/secret police for more than fifteen years. He knows how to wire a room for surveillance, how to shoot a man, how to effectively case a room for exits and identify both targets and threats to his principle at a glance. He is both an excellent shot with a pistol, and a superb martial artist. He can also use materia to cast magic with fair skill. Obviously he can never reach the level of a SOLDIER, and he rarely relies on materia, preferring to rely on his physical skills and strategic mind. He is very well-controlled and cool in a crisis. It's fair to say that he almost never panics, and is excellent at coolly assessing a situation and finding the best way out of any jam. He also has a very good grasp of himself. He knows who he is, and where his loyalties lie, and so long as those particular rocks remain solid, he can handle almost anything life throws at him. Weaknesses/Faults: Tseng is a bit too reliant upon those aforementioned rocks to steady him. If he lost Rufus and the last of his fellow Turks, he would be rather adrift, which makes him almost obsessive in his protection of Rufus ShinRa. I think it's telling that even though there really is no ShinRa Company left, he remains at Rufus' side, as vigilant as a guard dog. It's a testament to the depths of his regard for the man, but it's also like a man clinging to a rock in a storm. Tseng broods. A lot. He doesn't really let anyone know about it, and he's extremely self-reliant - which is both a blessing and a curse. He has incredible guilt over Zack's death, and Aerith's, and Veld's. He tends to heap everything that happens onto his own shoulders. But not only that, he doesn't rely on anyone - he has no emotional outlets, and while Aerith or Zack might have been able to tease him into letting them shoulder a few of his burdens, he no longer has anyone in his life who can fill that role. He maintains an emotional shield between himself and the world, clinging to his rock-hard control and never letting anyone see the emotions swirling inside him. Rufus can never see weakness in him because he's his employer, and the other Turks can never see that weakness, because Tseng is their superior. He is alone, even though he's surrounded by people he trusts completely. All of this emotional shielding makes him difficult to get close to. He has few actual social skills to speak of, and it's a rare person who can get through that armour and see what's inside. In fact, there have only been four people in his life, which gives you an idea. He retreats into a refuge of formality and professionalism to avoid emotional connection, and tells himself he has no real need for friends. Equipment: He has one pistol, roughly equivalent to a Glock 19, with a 19-round magazine. He has two spare clips, which gives him a total of 57 bullets. The pistol has two materia slots, which has an ice materia slotted and hooked to an elemental materia. He has a bracer on his left hand, also with three materia: Barrier, cover and restore He has a pocket field kit containing the following single-use items: - 5 hi-potions - 5 ethers - 5 antidotes - 1 elixir - 3 phoenix downs - 2 softs - 2 maidens kisses - 2 cormucopias - 2 echo screens - 2 hypers - 2 tranquilizers - 2 eye drops - 1 remedy - 1 tent | |
